Get to Know RIIBCOH, Glints’ Company Values that Drives Employees’ Contribution
Importance of a Value for a Company
Ying Cong Seah, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Glints, said that a company without value is only a group of people tied by financial incentives.
YC (the name Ying Cong usually goes by) also said that strategy works for many companies. However, he and Oswald Yeo (Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Glints) believe that careers are much more than monetary transactions.
"There comes a certain point in our maturation as human beings where we realise the deepest meaning in our lives come(s) from contributing to a cause much bigger than ourselves. Values are an expression of that cause," YC adds.
Money is important in terms of career. In spite of that, it’s not the factor that affects our work experience the most.
Instead, most of the time, people who work closely with us affect us the most. When you share values with your colleagues, you’re going to have an enjoyable work experience.
YC’s statement is in line with what The Balance Careers wrote. Workers are more likely to enjoy work when their values are consistent with their employers. That affects employees’ relationships with each other, hence impacts their productivity.
"Think about it, say you are an environmentalist, would you prefer working with a team who values the environment as much as you do, or a team that privileges financial metrics? Both are blameless, valid values, but there is one that clearly jives more with your worldview," said YC.
RIIBCOH, Glints’ Values
Glints has 7 company values that are called RIIBCOH. These values are:
1. Relentlessly resourceful
Relentlessly resourceful is about outsmarting obstacles, crafting a strategy or approach that allows Glintstars to reach their goal.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that we will justify all means. Glintstars have to achieve the outcome ethically.
2. Integrity
Integrity is about being truthful when making statements, actions, or decisions. However, this value does not end there.
Being brave to stay with the truth is a part of integrity. Say, Glintstars stumble upon a process, job, or decision that isn’t fitting. They won’t stay still and let those be.
Glintstars will ask questions to make sure that the process, job, or decision is right. But, if they turn out to be wrong, Glintstars will admit it and adjust themselves.
3. Impact
Numbers as a target is important. The process to achieve that target is also important. However, there’s a positive impact that needs to be made.
Glintstars work to give impact for the team, company, or customer. There’s also a bigger cause to fight for, a value.
At the end of the day, our big mission isn’t just about achieving numbers in KPIs or OKRs, but also caring for and living the values we believe in.
4. Beginners’ mindset
Beginners’ mindset is about taking care of our curiosity and thirst for knowledge. It’s about seeking feedback and growth, even though feedback doesn’t always feel good.
Moreover, beginners’ mindset is also about:
- ● owning your mistake and trying to grow over it
- ● being aware of cognitive bias
- ● making decisions based on data, not assumptions
- ● taking other’s opinion into consideration before making a decision
5. Customer obsessed
Customers are the reason a company exists. Hence, Glintstars have “customer obsessed” as one of their values.
Glintstars prioritize customers’ trust and value. They also are friendly and respectful to their customers.
Future customers' needs are also constantly predicted and innovation is being made to create customer value.
6. Ownership
Ownership is closely related to responsibility. Glintstars finish their task not just so it could be finished. They also give their best effort.
Being proactive is also a part of ownership. Glintstars will help others to reach their goal and give feedback or ideas to evolve their team or company.
7. High standards
Glintstars have a high goal, and they will give a big effort to make it happen.
In spite of that, a high goal is often costly, especially when it comes to time. A big idea won't be a reality in just one night.
Thus, delivering outcomes fast is also part of high standards.
Why Did Glints Choose RIIBCOH?
YC said that RIIBCOH wasn’t Glints’ first set of company values. This current value was born when Glints stumbled upon a hardship.
At that time, Glints almost ran out of cash twice. The company was near bankruptcy. In spite of that, some Glintstars stayed.
After that storm calmed, Glints tried to look deeper into what the remaining-Glintstars had. There were 3 values that all of them showed:
- ● relentlessly resourceful
- ● integrity
- ● beginners’ mindset
That’s when Glints’ values were born.
YC adds, "RIIBCOH came about because of pain, and that's how you know you are cutting close to authenticity."
